About the Indiana Department of Environmental Management:

Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

 

Role Overview

 

• The candidate will review all aspects of groundwater, geology, and explosive gasses related to hazardous waste and solid waste land disposals and confined feeding operations.

• The candidate will need: to be a good technical writer, have a strong background in hydrogeology, able to interpret rules and regulations pertaining to geology and groundwater, and have a good understanding of groundwater statistics.
• The candidate may need to work more than 7.5 hours/day if field work demands, but will be able to flex it out other days so as not to exceed the 75 hours in a two-week period.
• The candidate will need to effectively speak with internal and external Stakeholders on subjects concerning hydrogeology, statistics, and regulations.

  • Driving a state vehicle is required for this position.

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • providing productive interactions with other sections in the Department
  • ensuring appropriate actions follow applicable local, State, and Federal rules, policies, and guidance
  • coordinating with legal and other technical support staff
  • formulating investigative procedures, follows proper sampling procedures, conducts fieldwork
  • evaluating and writing thorough technical memos and letters summarizing the results from a variety of complex geological conditions and statistical evaluations. 

 

Preferred Experience: 

The applicant needs a minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Geology. Licensed Professional Geologists (LPGs) are preferred.

 

Job Requirements:

  • thorough knowledge of the full range of engineering, geological and hydrogeological principles and practices;
  • thorough knowledge of groundwater statistics;
  • thorough knowledge of landfill gas and its movement through geologic materials and groundwater;
  • outstanding communication skills;
  • knowledge of fundamental and Indiana-specific geology;
  • knowledge of well hydraulics, groundwater modeling and drinking water-related regulations;
  • thorough knowledge of the Office of Land Quality structure and operation;
  • ability to conduct intensive research for geologic and hydrogeological advancement of the program area;
  • desire to deliver superior customer service;
  • ability to write clear and concise narrative memos and letters and prepare effective presentations;
  • ability to mentor and direct professional staff, including consultants and facility representatives;
  • ability to adapt easily to changing priorities and business needs;
  • ability to coordinate services effectively to meet objectives within the specified timeframes;
  • ability to solve difficult problems and propose solutions;
  • knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal rules, policies, acts, and guidance;
  • writes standard operating procedures for geology, statistics, and related sciences, guidance and policy documents;
  • working knowledge of survey and mapping techniques, including GIS equipment;
  • working knowledge of, and ability to operate, geologic field-testing instruments;
  • knowledge of applicable ASTM, ITRC, OSHA, IAC, and US EPA guidance and regulations
